RITE: Promotability Factor

How do I get promoted? Why was I passed over? How did Sarah get promoted before me; I’ve been here longer?

All of these questions are valid concerns and commonly heard by managers when people want or get promoted. The misperception is that promotion is based on a single factor, one’s ability to do the job. This is a gross overstatement of influence. In order to be considered for promotion, people need to take into account a more comprehensive view of their overall performance. People need to be RITE for the position and understand and accept all four of these areas which by the way aren’t weighted equally:

Rather than ask, “How do I get promoted?”  Start thinking, “What can I do to be promotable?”
